About the CH07 Shell Chair

Designer: Hans J. Wegner
Year: 1963
Manufacturer: Carl Hansen & Son

Hans J. Wegner first drew up the CH07 Shell Chair in 1963, and today the Wegner Shell Chair is one of Hans Wegner’s most iconic chairs. Yet it almost didn’t make it. Wegner designed the CH07 for the annual Furniture Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen. While many critics lauded the lounge chair’s avant-garde design, the general public was lukewarm. The Shell Chair sold poorly after its initial release, and Carl Hansen & Son limited its production.

In the early ’90s, Wegner’s “Three-legged Shell Chair” began to attract impressive prices at renowned auctions around the globe, leading to Carl Hansen & Son re-introducing the chair in 1998.

The Shell Chair immediately won several design awards and the public absolutely loved it, showing that the CH07 Chair was truly ahead of its time.

The wing-like lines, arching curves, and three-legged design give the Shell Chair its distinctive silhouette and “Smiling Chair” nickname. Its deep seat is remarkably comfortable and a triangular footprint means the Shell Chair fits in a wide range of spaces, from waiting room corners to living room centerpieces.

The CH07 Shell Chair is available in a wide range of finishes and woods. Danish Design Store offers the complete collection, including CH07 Shell Chairs available for Quick-Ship to the USA.
